Mazanillo, and as these men had been waiting at that port for some time and were getting impatient, and as all the efforts to get the "Suisang's" passengers landed had proved futile,
permission was sought on the 16th June from the Government to
transfer part of the Suisang's passengers to the "Landratschieff
to permit the former to proceed to Manzanillo to take in the
Northern Chinese. On the 22nd. the permission was granted to the Co provided the transporting was done outside the harbour limits
and in the high seas. As this was impracticable and most
dangerous, it was not taken advantage of, and the necessary permission to make the transfer inside the breakwater was sought
anew, and after much pressing, it was finally given. On July 8th, 129 men were transferred from the "Suisang" to the
*Landratschieff". On the 11th the Suisang left for Manzanillo
and after taking on the Northern Chinese returned to Salina Cruz on the 20th. Subsequently on July 31st another transfer
of 144 man was made to the s.s. "Marie", and as there was dissatisfaction among the passengers, besides which many were sick with Beri-beri on board, she left for HongKong via Chefoo
on the 1st of August. Beri-beri first broke out on board this vessel on July 1st, due to the long detention on board ship,
lack of exercise and the crowded condition and to the intense
heat of the place.
On June 29th, the British Minister after seeing the
various Departments, communicated with the Foreign Office of
Mexico in writing, as also the Chinese Charge d'Affaires on
the 30th, and their communications were not replied to until
July 17th and when received it was most unsatisfactory; and during all this time the steamers of the Company were detained at Salina Cruz with sick passengers on board awaiting results
as Bri-beri was raging on board both ships.
